Ice Hockey World Cup. Finland’s 7 Goals, Incredible Latvia Advance to Quarterfinals
At the Ice Hockey World Championship, the group stage ended with two matches. In Group A, Finland, who had already secured third place and the quarter-final match against Canada, defeated Denmark 7-1.
But the last match in group B was much more interesting.
To qualify for the quarter-finals, Latvia had to score at least one point in the match against Switzerland, which had previously won all the matches and advanced to the playoffs from the first place.
And the Latvians coped with their task! Latvia led twice in the score, then lost 2:3, but at the end of the third period they equalized the score and moved the game into overtime. That was already enough for the quarterfinals.
However, in overtime, Latvia put the squeeze on the opponent, scoring the puck in the majority. The extra point allowed Latvia to jump straight to third place, displacing the Czech Republic.
In the quarter-final Latvia will play against Sweden.
